The Comptroller-General of Customs and President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Adewale Adeniyi, has charged Nigerian wrestlers to win medals at the forthcoming African Wrestling Championships scheduled for May 2026 in Alexandria, Egypt.
Adeniyi gave the charge on Tuesday in Abuja while hosting athletes, coaches and officials at the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters ahead of their departure.
He congratulated the wrestlers for earning qualification to represent Nigeria, describing the opportunity as both a privilege and a serious responsibility.
“Representing the national flag at a continental championship is a great obligation. You are no longer representing your states but Nigeria, and that is something we treasure deeply,” he said.
The NWF President urged the athletes to stay motivated by the prospect of hearing the national anthem during medal ceremonies, challenging them to return home with honours.
“I want that thought to drive you from the moment you step on Egyptian soil. Make a personal commitment to come back with medals,” he added.
Adeniyi emphasised that success at the championship would require discipline, determination, and strategic execution, noting that the technical crew had adequately prepared the team during camping despite limited resources.
“When the proposal for camping came, resources were tight, but we understood its importance and ensured it was organised,” he said, assuring the athletes of continued welfare and support from the federation.
He also called on the wrestlers to seize the opportunity to gain national recognition through outstanding performance.
“This is your chance to write your names in gold. Opportunities like this do not come often, so make the best of it,” Adeniyi stressed.
Highlighting Nigeria’s strong track record in African wrestling, he commended the female team for maintaining dominance in previous editions and challenged the male wrestlers to rise to the occasion.
“Our women are already champions. Staying at the top is even more difficult. For the men, this is an opportunity to prove that Nigeria belongs at the summit of African wrestling,” he said.
Head coach, Akuh Purity, praised Adeniyi for his support, assuring that the team is fully committed to achieving success at the tournament.
“We are not just going to maintain our position but to return victorious,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the athletes, Hannah Reuben and Ulabo Solomon expressed appreciation for the support received, pledging to make the country proud.
“We understand the task ahead and are determined to compete with the best in Africa and return with honours,” they said.
