Army Worried as Eket Youths Shun Military Recruitment Drive

A delegation from the Nigerian Army Headquarters, led by Brig.-Gen. Moses Ikobah, has expressed concern over the declining number of youths from Eket joining the military.

Ikobah made this known on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Tommey Akaninyene, at his office.

Describing the trend as worrisome, Ikobah stressed the importance of representation in the armed forces, noting that leaders in the military should inspire and create opportunities for others from their communities.

“When soldiers are gathered, I hardly hear people from Eket. I begin to wonder what is happening. Do Eket people no longer join the Nigerian Army?” he queried.

He revealed that out of the 400 recruits expected from Akwa Ibom State this year, only a handful are from Eket, urging youths in the area to take advantage of the ongoing recruitment exercise.

Ikobah also highlighted that a career in the army goes beyond combat, describing it as a unique and rewarding professional path.

In his response, Akaninyene called on eligible youths in the local government to seize the opportunity and enlist, assuring the delegation of the council’s full support.

He commended the efforts of the state government under Umo Eno for facilitating the recruitment process and pledged to mobilise more young people from Eket to participate.

“I can assure you that the number of Eket applicants this time will be significant. We are ready to give our full support to ensure more of our youths join the Nigerian Army,” he said.
