The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division has concluded its 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition, showcasing the combat readiness and operational efficiency of its troops.

The four-day exercise, held from April 13 to 16 at the Giginya Military Cantonment, ended with a closing ceremony at the Division Training School Obstacle Ground.

In a statement issued on Friday, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the competition was designed to test the physical fitness, tactical skills, and overall preparedness of participating soldiers.

The event featured a range of demanding activities, including drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms, and obstacle crossing, with junior soldiers engaging in intensive drills throughout the period.

Participating formations included 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 8 Division Garrison, 48 Engineer Brigade, and 58 Signal Brigade, all within the Division’s area of responsibility.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Northwest) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, commended the troops for their discipline and commitment.

He stressed the importance of continuous training in military professionalism, noting that soldiers often spend more time training than in actual combat operations.

According to him, consistent training equips personnel with the skills required to overcome evolving security threats. He urged troops to take all training activities seriously, describing them as critical to career development and operational success.

At the end of the competition, 8 Division Garrison emerged as the overall winner with 590 points. 1 Brigade secured second place with 490 points, while 58 Signal Brigade came third with 460 points.

The General Officer Commanding congratulated the winning teams and encouraged all participating units to build on their performance ahead of future competitions.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of various security and paramilitary agencies, with highlights including obstacle crossing displays, presentation of medals and trophies, and group photographs to mark the event.
