The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has stated that professional military education remains a cornerstone in building a modern and adaptive fighting force capable of confronting the numerous security challenges facing the nation.

Shaibu made the remark on Friday when a delegation from the Defense Security Cooperation University (DSCU) Nigeria Programme paid him a courtesy visit at Army Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening professional military education through strategic collaboration with international defence institutions.

Shaibu disclosed that the Nigerian Army would continue to participate in relevant DSCU courses, particularly those designed to enhance defence management, logistics systems and institutional capacity across the Service.

The COAS stressed that exposing personnel to specialised training programmes and international academic platforms would sharpen strategic thinking, improve defence management practices and deepen institutional knowledge.

He added that such initiatives are essential in preparing troops to effectively manage complex operational and administrative responsibilities in contemporary military environments.

In his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Major General Miguel Casteyanoss, explained that DSCU’s engagement with the Nigerian Army focuses on institutional capacity building aimed at helping partner nations sustain and replicate military capabilities over time.

He noted that the university provides specialised courses and advisory support designed to strengthen defence governance, logistics management and policy development.

Casteyanoss added that the ongoing collaboration also includes initiatives to support institutional systems such as material readiness, reporting and life-cycle management frameworks.

He expressed confidence that the continued participation of Nigerian Army personnel in DSCU programmes would further reinforce professional standards, institutional resilience and long-term capability development within the Nigerian Army.
