NUJ Urges Electoral Reforms, Backs Technology for Transparent Result Management

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for comprehensive electoral reforms, emphasising the adoption of technology-driven mechanisms in the management and transmission of election results to strengthen transparency and public trust.

The Union said it has closely followed recent legislative deliberations on the framework for conducting future elections, particularly debates surrounding the handling and movement of results from polling units.

In a press statement, the National President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya, stressed that clarity in electoral procedures remains critical to Nigeria’s democratic stability. He warned that any ambiguity in the management of election results could undermine public confidence and heighten political tension across the country.

According to him, Nigerians have consistently demanded reforms that guarantee openness, verifiability, and credibility in the electoral process. He noted that many modern democracies now rely on digital tools to protect the integrity of elections and ensure that outcomes genuinely reflect the will of voters.

Yahya stated that the prompt electronic transmission of polling unit results to designated collation platforms would significantly reduce suspicion, enhance transparency, and minimise post-election disputes. He added that a clear, consistent, and technology-supported process would strengthen institutional credibility and reinforce Nigeria’s democratic culture.

As lawmakers conclude consultations and fine-tune legislative provisions ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NUJ urged them to prioritise measures that inspire confidence among voters. The Union specifically called for the institutionalisation of clear and enforceable guidelines for the real-time transfer of election results.

The NUJ further noted that Nigeria’s democracy must continue to evolve in line with global best practices while responding to the aspirations of its citizens. It maintained that strengthening the framework for result management would contribute to political stability and deepen public faith in democratic governance.

The Union called on all stakeholders to act in the national interest and ensure that the electoral architecture for forthcoming elections promotes transparency, accountability, and public trust.
