The Tincan Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has handed over 2,366 packs of cannabis indica, valued at over N4.7 billion, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Lagos.

The seizure, involving a 40-foot container intercepted during routine enforcement operations at the Tincan Island Port, comprised 55 jumbo bags of cannabis indica concealed inside three used vehicles — a Hyundai Santa Fe, a Toyota Sienna and a Toyota Matrix.

Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s spokesperson, CSC Oscar Ivara.

Speaking during the handover, Onyeka said Customs officers acted in line with global best practices on border protection and public safety, in line with the 2026 International Customs Day theme of vigilance and commitment.

He explained that the container was examined on January 28 following intelligence-led profiling, in collaboration with operatives of the NDLEA and the Department of State Services.

“A 40-foot container was found to contain 2,366 packs of cannabis indica in 55 jumbo bags,” Onyeka said.

He added that officers also discovered a Colt MK IV .45 calibre pistol with an empty magazine hidden inside the container.

According to him, one suspect has been apprehended in connection with the seizure, warning that the Service would not tolerate drug smuggling or any form of transnational crime capable of threatening national security and public health.

Receiving the consignment, NDLEA Commander, Solomon Omotoso, commended Customs for the sustained inter-agency cooperation, assuring that the NDLEA would intensify investigations and prosecution in line with existing laws.
