INEC Yet to Decide on Labour Party Leadership Dispute - Oyekanmi

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted media reports suggesting it has recognised specific individuals as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP).

In a statement released on Thursday, INEC clarified that it has not yet made any decision regarding the ongoing leadership disagreements within the Labour Party. The commission also addressed reports concerning the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that no changes have been made to its official website listings in that regard.

INEC explained that the names of Labour Party National Officers were previously uploaded to its website following a court order unrelated to the recent Supreme Court judgment. Similarly, the commission stated that the name of the PDP National Secretary on the website had neither been removed nor reinstated.

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, emphasised that as a law-abiding institution, the commission is currently carefully reviewing the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public “in due course.”

The statement aims to dispel what INEC described as “false and misleading” reports circulating in the media. The Labour Party has been embroiled in internal disputes regarding its leadership structure, and the Supreme Court’s recent judgment is expected to have implications for the resolution of these disagreements. INEC’s cautious approach indicates its commitment to adhering to legal processes before making any official pronouncements on the matter.
