Every year on March 8th, Nigerian military wives join the rest of the world to commemorate International Women's Day (IWD). This day was originally created to promote the rights of women and girls and eliminate discrimination against them.
This year’s theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no one is left behind. This special commemoration aims to reaffirm global commitments to gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
At the Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, the President of Defence and Police Officers Wives Association, DEPOWA, Mrs Oghogho Gwabin Musa called for accelerated action to implement policies and programs that promote women’s empowerment and inclusion.
While celebrating the achievements of women and recognizing the ongoing challenges females face, such as discrimination, violence, and unequal opportunities, Mrs Musa acknowledged the resilience and determination of women, noting their significant contributions in various.
“Today, we gather to celebrate a unique occasion, international, International Women’s this year. The theme of women and health accelerate action resonates deeply with us as we strive for a more inclusive gender equitable society. We are also reminded of the progress made towards achieving gender equality.
“However, we are aware of the significant work that remains to be done. Women and girls around the world continue to face numerous challenges, including discrimination, violence, female genital mutilation, unequal access to opportunities and lots more.
“ Despite these challenges, women have constantly demonstrated their resilience, determination and collective action. We have stand the impact that women have when they serve and lead from the battlefield to the boardroom, women are breaking barriers as the power we are committed to empowering women, promoting women’s empowerment and providing support to women and families in need.
“Today, we are not only celebrating the achievements of women but also recommitting access to the pursuit of gender purity.
“We are calling on institutions and individuals to accelerate action and implement more policies and programs that promote women's empowerment and inclusion,” she stated.
President DEPOWA stressed the importance of International Women’s Day and the need to continue accelerating action for gender equality.
She urged participants to walk away from negative influences and to focus on positive aspects of their lives.

The 2025 International Women’s Day with the theme ” Women and Health #Accelerate Action” encourages individuals, organisations, and governments to take concrete steps to advance women’s rights and remove barriers to progress.
