The Military has declared a curfew in Gwoza with immediate effect after two suicide bombers detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a wedding venue in Tashan Mararaba near the Fire Service in Gwoza town, Borno State, and at the burial ground while trying to bury the dead persons, another bomber disguised as a mourner detonated an IED.
Military intelligence told SpyeTV News that the first blast killed a soldier, and seven others including wedding guests, fifteen people were also injured while the second explosion at the burial ground killed one person.
According to Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso who also confirmed the incident said the first bomber was carrying a baby on her back on Saturday at Tashan Mararaba near the Fire Service in Gwoza town stormed the venue of the wedding and detonated the IED.
The explosion claimed the lives of the woman, her baby, and six others, with fifteen individuals who sustained injuries currently receiving treatment at General Hospital Gwoza.
An eye witness who identify herself as Amina, told SpyeTV that the suicide bomber targeted a wedding ceremony and the attack shattered the joy and celebration of the special day, leaving families and loved ones in mourning.
Though, a military source in Gwoza said the female suicide bomber crossed the road opposite the military base and immediately detonated the IED, killing a soldier in the process.
The terrorists reinforced and returned to the 192 Brigade but the Nigerian Army troops successfully repelled the attack. The bomber identified as a young mother in her twenties pretended to be a guest at the wedding.
While trying to bury the dead persons, another bomber disguised as a mourner detonated an IED at the burial ground, killing one person.
The injured are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Gwoza.
The military has, as a result of the explosions, declared a curfew in Gwoza with immediate effect. The spokesperson of Sector One Operation Hadin Kai and 7 Division confirmed the incident but said no situation report yet from Gwoza
Borno State have been experiencing suicide bombing lately , just this year March 18, 2024, two people sustained varying injuries after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device strapped to his body near a mosque in Biu Local Government of Borno State.
The state Public Relations Officer, ASP Daso Nahum, said the event occurred around 8 pm on Sunday when Muslim faithful were observing the night prayers.
Also on April 17 this year, an IED was reportedly planted by terrorists suspected to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.
This resulted in the death of least 10 persons, while 20 others sustained varying degrees of injury when a commercial vehicle drove over an Improvised Explosive Device.
