The Nigerian Navy is poised to bolster the safety of the nation’s maritime environment and reduce underwater hazards by providing accurate and updated data and charts in celebration of the 2024 World Hydrography Day (WHD).
During a media briefing in Abuja, Rear Admiral Ayodele Olugbode, Hydrographer of the Federation, announced the commencement of the World Hydrography Day celebrations. He emphasized the importance of hydrography for safe navigation, marine resource management, and environmental protection.
Rear Admiral Olugbode highlighted the 2024 focus on developing a Digital Twin of the Ocean, a virtual model that integrates historical and future hydrographic data to enhance understanding and management of marine environments.
The celebrations, taking place from June 14-19 in Abuja, will showcase the vital role of hydrography in the nation’s maritime environment. Events will include awareness lectures on hydrography for selected secondary schools in Abuja, Enugu, Lagos, and Port Harcourt to inspire students to consider careers in hydrography.
This year’s theme, “Hydrographic Information: Enhancing Safety, Efficiency, and Sustainability in Marine Activities,” aligns with the core principles of hydrography. Olugbode noted that safety is crucial for all maritime stakeholders, relying on accurate hydrographic data to allow seafarers to navigate confidently, mitigate risks, and ensure the safety of lives and property at sea.
“Consider the impact of our hydrographic surveys on the Lagos Channel and Bonny River,” Olugbode said. “These surveys identified and mitigated underwater hazards, significantly reducing maritime accidents. The precision of our charts has enabled vessels to navigate these busy waterways safely and efficiently, demonstrating the critical role of hydrography in maritime safety.”
He added, “Efficiency is central to sustainable marine activities. Precise charting and mapping facilitate smoother and more economical maritime operations, minimizing fuel consumption, reducing emissions, and optimizing resource utilization.”
