MILAD, General Diop Commends NIGCON 1 for Professionalism, Steadfastness, Discipline in Abyei

 

The Military Adviser (MILAD) Office of Military Affairs, Department of Peace Operations, United Nations, General Birame Diop has commended NIGCON 1 for their professionalism, steadfastness, discipline, and commitment in the discharge of their duties towards ensuring peace in Abyei despite the visible challenges and conditions in which the Unit is operating. 

The MILAD, General Birame Diop gave the commendation when he paid an operational visit on 26 October 2023 to the Nigerian Contingent (NIGCON 1) serving in the mission. 

He was accompanied by the Acting Head of Mission/Force Commander, United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) South Sudan. 

The aim of the visit was to assess the operational readiness of the troops and to interact with them to get firsthand feedback from troops in the field.

While briefing the MILAD, the Contingent Commander, Col EJ Nkereuwem highlighted the activities of the Unit and the successes recorded since its deployment including the aspect of civil-military cooperation to win the hearts and minds of the local populace in Abyei. 

He also assured the MILAD of Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring international peace and security through its peacekeeping efforts.

He also commended the Contingent Commander Colonel EJ Nkereuwem for the valuable contributions he has made since the deployment of NIGCON 1. He assured them of the support of the Department of Peace Operations at the UN Headquarters in ensuring the Unit fulfils its mandate successfully in Abyei.

Additionally, the MILAD, had the honour of decorating 3 soldiers of NIGCON 1 who were recently promoted to higher ranks after being found worthy in character and the discharge of their duties. They are Warrant Officer Suleiman Abubakar, Warrant Officer Lawal Saleh, and Warrant Officer Balarabe Mamman.
