The Nigeria Police has confirmed the arrest of one Mr. Chude Franklin Nnamdi with Twitter handle ‘@chude__’ for cyberstalking in Onitsha, Anambra State on the 18th of March, 2023.
In a press statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officers, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspect is being investigated by the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) Abuja, for cyberstalking.
He said pursuant to a complaint received via a petition, about his activities on social media which contravenes the provision of Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 and other criminal laws.
Furthermore, a prima facie case has been established against him while the case file has been forwarded to the Force Legal Department for further action.
Chude Nnamdi was arrested in connection with a petition written to the IGP on cyber related offences. The petitioner alleged him of defarmation of character, cyberstalking, etc, contrary to the provisions of the CyberCrime Prohibition Act, 2015.
Adejobi explained that Chude arrest has nothing to do with politics or any posts on the just concluded elections but connected to established cyber related offences against an individual.
"It is imperative to disabuse the minds of members of the public and debunk the widely circulated and distorted news about his arrest.
"He has a case to answer as a prima facie case has been established against him. We will always operate in tandem with the laws of the land. Thanks", he noted.
The Nigeria Police Force therefore urges members of the public to familiarize themselves with provisions of the law and be aware of the penalties for violating them most especially cybercrime laws with the new trends in the digital media space.
