The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has commenced the distribution of cheques to cover Insurance benefits of officers who lost their lives while in active service, as well as those who suffered various forms of life-threatening injuries while on active duty.
Force Public Relations Officer CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement on Thursday disclosed that a total sum of thirteen billion, six hundred and twenty-eight million, five hundred and thirty-five thousand, five hundred and eighty Naira (13,628,535,580.00k) to pay the backlog of a total of six thousand one hundred and eighty-four (6,184) personnel that had previously fallen under the uninsured/uncovered periods of Group Life Assurance and Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme, covering from Year 2012 – 2020.
Presenting the cheques to about Seven Thousand families of deceased officers and those injured or rendered disabled in the line of duty, the IGP sympathizing with the families of the deceased Officers, knowing that nothing will bring back their loved ones but urged them to judiciously utilize the funds in training their children.
He reassured them that the Force under his leadership will continue to do more in advancing their welfare interests and that of serving personnel.
The IGP while reiterating the value of human life and wholeness, emphasized that prompt payment of insurance and other benefits due to officers who have met with some misfortunes due to the risky nature of policing in our contemporary environment and unforeseen hazards of policing, would greatly boost their morale and ensure they put in their best in service to the nation.
The IGP further promised better welfare packages for members of the police family either serving, retired, or slain in the line of duty, so as to cement the already existing esprit de corps amongst the components of the police family.
He commended the Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Uzairu Abdullahi for his leadership and pro-activeness which culminated in the unprecedented occasion.
"Indeed, this will go down as another legacy which undoubtedly will re-energize serving officers to sustain their loyalty and commitment to national service", he said.
