The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Sunday lauded a patriotic Nigerian motorist, who confronted a one-way driver and enforced him to obey the traffic law until the driver retreated to doing what is right.
The Force PRO gave this commendation via his official Twitter handle, after the viral video of the erred driver trends on social media space with an inscription asking, “Why do people take one-way without considering safety of others?”
He said, “Nice one. This is how it should be. All of us must be involved in the drives to effect changes in our society. I wish this mentality was channeled to combating crimes and criminality in Nigeria. We need this idea and mentality.”
In another tweet, the CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi advise Nigerians never to assault any Policeman in uniform or in mufti when on duty.
In his tweet, while reacting to another viral video of a man struggling with a policeman's riffle to disarm the security operative during a heated argument on the road.
“Even if a policeman on uniform slaps a civilian, the civilian has no right to retaliate. More so, if he’s on uniform, it’s an act of disrespect to Nigeria to beat an officer on uniform.
“The disrespect is not to the policeman but to our nation and it’s a crime as enshrined in our criminal laws. So, it’s not a case of what the policeman did that led to it, but the reaction of the civilians who actually assaulted the police.
“If police assault a civilian, you report and actions will be taken to rebuke him, not to take the law into your hands. Let alone, it’s a matter of checking of phones, which can be easily reported and addressed. Now they are kept in our 5-star hotel in Lagos and will be in court on Monday. Are you going to visit them or send them food, or appear in court to defend them? Don’t support what is bad, ok,”he noted.
Adejobi further stated that if a person assaults police personnel in uniform, it would be seen as “an act of disrespect to Nigeria.”
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said, the incident happened at Meiran and the two suspects have been arrested and detained.
"They will be arraigned first thing Monday morning. This video will be tendered before the magistrate. For those interested in defending them in court, I shall provide details of the court. They will never be denied of defence. It’s their inalienable right.
