... Army Chief Discusses Importance of Vision Statement, For Military Commandants

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya has urged all Military Commandants to give the process of having vision statement adequate attention, as it is critical in attaining organizations mandate which would reveal Commandants' leadership style and the scope of effort needed to make it to desire level.

Lt General Faruk Yahaya gave this assertion during  an interactive session with Participants of Army War College, Course 6/2022 and while delivering a lecture titled, "My Vision For Nigerian Army " on Friday 6th May 2022 at the Army War College of Nigeria Abuja.

The COAS who started his lecture with quote by Roy Bennett "Good leaders have vision and inspire others to help them turn vision into reality. Great leaders have vision, share vision, and inspire others to create their own" described the interactive session as to inspired the participants of Course 6/2022 to set vision towards achieving various goals, necessirate to propel the armed Forces to greater height.

He also said, the lecture would spur the third process required to improve training to international standards as well adhere the security challenges bedeviling the nation and the sub region.

General Yahaya while giving the objectives of the vision statement said, having a Vision statement further affords a military commandant the opportunity to establish the influence and legacy he insist to achieve on the organization at the end of his tenure in command.

He noted that, It is important for visionary leaders to give the process of writing their vision statements adequate time, because it is a critical step in attaining the overall organisational mandate. 

"An Inspiring vision statement for the Nigerian Army should be clear, simple, focused, unique, and whole while foster an adaptive attitude among members  of the service. Writing a vision statement is part of the strategic visioning process and it requires planning, time and consideration."

"It must be well nested with the overall purpose that is sort to be achieved at the highest level of operation. This pattern of nesting follows down the chain of command implying that Commandants must  write the vision for thier formations and Units from that of the Chief of Army Staff downwards."he said.

In his lecture, General Yahaya emphasized on the need to set vision as a leader, as every organization is established for a purpose and it is the responsibility of the leadership to create a roadmap attaining a design state of affairs which is often referred to as his vision.

Leadership harnesses manpower, equipment and structure to achieve such set out vision. The need to address shortfalls in professionalism. Issue of synergy between the services and sister security agenoles. Pillars: Professionalism, Readiness and Administration. 

He added that, having vision, leaders often articulate a broad line of action which serve to inform members of the organization of the state of affairs it seized to achieve after a period of time and to motivate them to play their part in the process. This has been a trend in most progressive organizations worldwide and the military is no exception.

The Army Chief also said, the military at the national Defence often requires progressive leadership with foresight to tackle its current and emerging threat. As such, the major statement of any military leaders served as strategic plan for success which inculpsulate the broad end state that the vision owing to the implementation of policies and conduct it activities during his tenure of command.

Having vision, act as a guide when national security challenges emerge and help to motivate the military towards achieving shared goals with the government. This will undoubtedly increase efficiency, operational readiness and synergy in the attainment of national security objectives.

During the lecture, the Chief of Army Staff disccused his vision for the Nigerian Army, provides conception discuss on his vision statement. He also highlighted the pillar of his command and also provided an insight into his modest efforts so far.

Speaking with Defence correspondents after the session with Course 6/2022, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya said, he is very pleased with the robot discussion with the participants. Important decisions were made to improve on Nigerian army operations, activities and engagement in pursuit of the vision of the Nigerian Army along with other services and agencies to bring security to Nigerian and to pursue all criminal elements in the country

The COAS describe the lecture as an important course in the career of officers and senior officers, and Lieutenant Colonel rank as the key operators of Army, policy and other activities

The COAS therefore said, the Nigerian Army will continue to review and assess the operational activities. "An interaction like this come up with other areas and things that we need to put in place.

The interactive session with Chief of Army Staff was well attended by the Commandant Army War College Nigeria, Maj General Bamidele Alabi, past Commandants of the College and all the 83 participants of Course 6/2022.
