Ten soldiers were reportedly killed in an ambush by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists along Maiduguri/Monguno road in Borno State.

The troops were travelling in a convoy to Maiduguri, the state capital; when the insurgents laid ambush that led to the killing of two Civilian JTF personnel on Thursday.

Confirming the incident on Friday in Maiduguri, a military officer said that two soldiers were also abducted by the terrorists and fled towards the Lake Chad region.

“Our troops were travelling along the road, when their convoy came under fierce attacks from both sides,” he said.

He narrated that the soldiers were returning from one of the Super Camps in northern Borno state when the incident happened.

On how the troops were killed, he said: “The ISWAP terrorists must have planted the mines over the night, with information that the troops will use the road by morning.

“An officer believed to be their unit commander, was also killed in the attack.”

He added that some of the soldiers also sustained injuries and evacuated to a military facility in Maiduguri for treatment.

According to him, the terrorists also snatched some weapons and other fighting equipment along with the abducted soldiers.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army had said it will continue with the kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.
