During summer, measures like staying indoors frequently, wearing light-clothing materials basically made from cottons and staying under the shade are used.
In order to cope with the current climate conditions in Nigeria, where there is also challenge of epileptic power supply, experts have advised on some of the major under-listed methods.
1. People should drink more water to keep themselves hydrated. Keep a water bottle with you to remind you to take water. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks during this period. Drinking water first thing early in the morning is ideal.
2. Someone should reduce intake of foods that are rich in protein, because they increase metabolic heat. Fresh foods, fruits and vegetables are better options.
3. This is one of the most important methods. Every individual should monitor his or her blood pressure regularly.
4. People should as much as possible, stay indoors between 12noon and 3pm, where the sun is intense.
5. Taking cold baths before going to bed at night helps to reduce internal body heat.

– When normal maximum temperature of a station is less than or equal to 40*C Heat Wave Departure from normal is 5*C to 6*C Severe Heat Wave Departure from normal is 7*C or more
– When normal maximum temperature of a station is more than 40*C Heat Wave Departure from normal is 4*C to 5*C Severe Heat Wave Departure from normal is 6*C or more
– When actual maximum temperature remains 45*C or more irrespective of normal maximum temperature, heat waves should be declared.
