A 56-year-old man, Segun Odofin, has been arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court, Ogun State, for allegedly pretending to be a journalist.
The prosecutor, Corporal Moshood Hammed, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence on August 9 at 4p.m., at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
He said that the accused falsely presented himself as a journalist attached to the News Magazine, Lagos.
Hammed said: “The accused was caught by some members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State, during the thanksgiving ceremony of Dr. Ade Abolurin, the former Commandant-General of National Security Civil Defence Corps.
“He was arrested and taken to Ibara police station, where he was questioned and he confessed to being a fake journalist and that the News Magazine identity card found in his possession was forged by him at a printing press in Abuja.
“Odofin also confessed that this had been his means of livelihood for a long time as he had no other means of providing for his family.”
The accused, who was not represented by a counsel, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of impersonation.
Magistrate Martins Akinyemi granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
