NICO student slumps in hostel, dies: Poor Facilities, Non payment of Training Allowance and Poor Accomodation Causes Her Depression


A student of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) died on Wednesday after collapsing at the institute’s hostel in Lagos.
An official of the institute told us that the woman, simply identified as
Tina, died while being taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The official, who pleaded anonymity, said Tina was
a worker in the institute’s Abuja office.
“Tina had been very ill, She was depressed and needed some financial
assistance to get medical attention.
A student of the institute also disclosed that, they were all sent to the training school without paying their salaries and training allowances. On getting to the training School, the hostel were met in poor condition and there were no mattresses for the students to sleep. A lots of us had to take loan and buy mattress and food stuffs in order to survive. When Tina came to me last sunday, she asked me to give her N200 and if i can add N100, which i did. Tina came from Abuja office and she was very depressed after realising that, she had no money to spend at the traning school" She said.
Another colleague of Tina who spoke to us also disclosed, they learnt that, the Federal governement already paid their trainng allowance but the Ogas at the Top are banking on their money.
 A top official of the institute, who also did not want to be identified, confirmed the student’s death. she said members of staff had concluded arrangements to take her body to mortuary.
“LASUTH by its policy will not accept the corpse of
a patient that did not die in the hospital.
“This is a rude shock to us, it is quite painful,’’ the
official said. We learnt that a cleaner also died earlier this year while
on duty.
NICO Training school located at the National Theatrer, Iganmu Lagos which commences 2015-2016 session in January and accommodates over 2000 students-staff of the institute nationwide and some private student across the country.
